Bits & Bytes: It's not about us... www.thecounselinggeek.com

As I write this – I am half-way done with the phenomenon casually referred to as the week before spring break. As anyone in education knows – this week is typically full of upset parents, things going wrong, crisis after crisis and pretty much the polar opposite of the easiest week of your life. Luckily (for all of us) there are two more “get ups” before a much needed week off and then we dive into the quick approach to the end of the year.

At school recently – we had a situation, which I won’t go into detail on, but essentially consisted of well established expectations being gone around in a somewhat unscrupulous fashion. We did what we could with the situation, but it was frustrating. For those of you who do not know me – I am an ISTJ personality type (A great site for personality type fun = 16 Personalities) and the personality page for ISTJ gets me to a “T”. From reading it – I wondered how I became a school counselor. More on this in a future post, but needless to say – I love my policies and guidelines. When these were skirted – I felt personally slighted for a bit. It effected my mood and my ability to counsel students.

It took me stepping back and literally telling myself out-loud “It’s not about me…it’s not about me.” Only then could I re-focus and move forward with my day.

In education – we have a unique job of ensuring safety, learning and future prospects for students of all ages. We end up getting highly personally invested in our work and when someone or something breaks your rules or expectations – many times we feel personally cheated. I sure needed a reminder that – it is not about me – it is about the students.
