2015-2016 Counseling Geek Financial Year In Review

A look at the ins and outs (mostly outs) of running a website

Keeping it transparent.

Hello faithful and fellow Geek. Each year I provide a brief yearly review of the ins and outs of The Counseling Geek. This analysis will be from June 1, 2015 to June 30th, 2016. I will be including SC|CS 2016 numbers in this report as well. As you will see – running this site is far from a money making venture, but it grows me professionally and also helps develop my professional presence. I see it as an investment in my future and it has also helped create opportunities to go speak around the country (and be paid for my time). If you want to support through speaking or consulting – please see my speaking and professional services page. Thanks!

What’s going out?

The table below will show you the operating expenses (minus any personal gifts to things like #SC|CS15) of running this site:

Total net for June 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016 is a loss of $493.63.

Please note that some of this is upfront costs that will not appear next year. I pay for multiple year contracts of hosting services and I also had a change in host provider that required investment sooner rather than later. I have several speaking engagements in later in 2016 that will offset this loss.

What this means and what can I do to help?

This does not mean that TCG is shuttering the site – I knew by running this site and making a few upgrades over the last year and a half that it would cost more money. That is one reason I started doing some light advertising, but $60 is not bad overall. I don’t run this site to make money (hah!), but it would be nice to run at zero expense and possibly have a little left over to put back in to improve the site more (and fund more #SC|CS17 scholarships).

What you can do to help this and also say thank you is replace your Amazon bookmark with this one: http://www.amazon.com/?tag=thecougee-20 and use that link anytime you or your school purchases items from Amazon. This costs you, the reader, nothing and provides a kick back of about 4-6% of each purchase to support the site. A very easy and non-intrusive way to support this site and improve it in the future. Please share this simple step with colleagues and friends. You can also ask your school person to change their link. If your school is anything like mine – they spend TONS of money on Amazon orders. This could give us lots of funds to put towards #SC|CS 2017 and beyond.

I appreciate your reading, interacting, and sharing of my resources. My aim is to make this site helpful, fun, and engaging. Please don’t hesitate to reach out and contact me with any questions.
