You did not misread it – it is that time of the year. I am proud to announce the opening of the 2014 ASCA School Counseling Community Scholarship. Thanks to generous donations from companies like Hobsons and Universal Technical Institute in addition to donations from counselor colleagues (thanks to Erin Mason, Franciene Sabens, Matthew Meyers, Darrel Sampson, Cynthia Morton, & several other donors who wish to remain anonymous) – we can support two full registration scholarships with a partial scholarship to counselors and graduate students.
Here is the low down on the application:
This year we are changing it up and I am hoping to accomplish two things through the process: stretch your technology skills and provide re-usable resources for our fellow counselors.
To submit yourself into the scholarship contest, you must use at least one technology tool that will push your ability level (honesty factor here) and select one of the following products to submit:
– Counseling PSA Video: 2 – 5 minute video about a topic you are passionate about or think would be helpful to other counselors. This should be reusable and general enough for other counselors across the nation to use at their school if they choose. Final video needs to be hosted on YouTube or Vimeo. Please follow the final submission instructions to finish.
– Digital Poster Series: Create a series of 3-5 posters that counselors can post around their schools. Should be 8.5×11 or Legal paper size and have a common theme. Final images to be submitted in .pdf or .jpeg format.
– Song with a Message: Create an original or rendition of a song and record sound or video with sound of your song that gets an important message about school counseling across to students. Song should be submitted in .mp3/.mp4 format or uploaded to YouTube/Vimeo. Must be at least 2 minutes long.
– Submit a proposal: I do not want to squash your tech/artistic freedom. If you feel you have an idea that would fit within using your tech tools and creating a resource for other counselors – email me your proposal and I will get back to you with the okay or with additional requirements.
After you have created your submission, head to the following Google Form and submit the info requested with your product. Note: it will ask you for a short answer response to what you are most excited to learn about at ASCA 2014 and how the product you created stretched your tech skills.
I will be reviewing the entries after the submission deadline and selecting the winner by their application, product submission (usefulness to other counselors and amount of “stretching” done with a little consideration on quality), and the application form. I will do my best to be fair and get a second opinion if needed/available. Winners will be notified by email and funds will be transferred via PayPal or check. Please see the “fine print” below for rules and requirements.
The submission period has lapsed for this scholarship – check back next year!

Fine Print: This is a closed entry contest – it is only open to current professional school counselors and graduate students enrolled in a school counseling program. This will be verified by contacting your school site or university supervisor. If we are not able to verify your employment or enrollment, the prize will be awarded to the next winner. The winner must attend ASCA 2014 or sign up for the live streamed event (amount will be adjusted to registration cost of full live stream event if that option is selected). If you win and are not able to go, it is your duty to inform Jeff and/or send the funds back so he can pass them along to someone who can attend. It is requested that a quick note of thanks be provided following ASCA 14 so that it can be shared with the sponsors. Jeff reserves the ability to make final decisions, changes, or cancellations for any reason in the process. Questions can be sent in via email.
