Happy Summer of Shopping!

Hopefully most of you get to take a break at this time of the year. I wanted to share the last School Counselor Shopping List of the 15-16 year with you. This series about products that I have purchased myself and love. I want to share the personal experience and pass on the goodies to you too!

(Please note – most of the item links below are affiliate links. These provide a small % back to the referring party (me) for sending business but cost the customer (you) nothing and you get the same price! This is what I use to pay the costs of running this site and supporting SCCS)

Essential Storage

I have been an avid Dropbox user for years now and finally had to make the jump to a paid version of Dropbox. If you DON’T know what Dropbox is – check out this page, but most people are familiar with Dropbox. You are able to sign up for FREE with tons of features. You are limited on space, but for average users – you should be totally fine. It took me saving lots of blog, CASC, and other items to my Dropbox to finally fill my allotment.

Going Pro

After wearing down my storage, I decided to pony up the $99/year (or $9.99/mo) for 1TB of digital, always accessible storage. I save almost everything to Dropbox now. You can create school folders and personal folders and have it sync between your home and work computers plus all your mobile devices! Love me some Dropbox!

I am going all in with @Dropbox Pro - thanks for the tip @CounselingGeek Click To Tweet

High School Books

(sorry middle and elementary levels - HS is where I know my books so I cannot recommend useful texts - read on for other great buys though!)

At work, I have a large bookshelf – and it is full. One reason is that when I was a graduate student – I made it a point to purchase a used book or two from Amazon each semester I took classes. This has allowed me to develop a library of different resources that I have grown after being able to buy books through my school too. Here are a few of my favorites!

Fiske Guide to Colleges (current year)

While I don’t buy into College Ratings that much (sorry US News) – I find this book very helpful and so do my students & parents. I feel the Fiske Guide (which they produce each year so I grab a new on every 3-4 years typically) provides a better, non-marketing centric look at schools. I allow parents and students to check out books from my library and this is one that is most frequently off my shelf.

Thirteen Reasons Why (Novel/Fiction)

Thirteen Reasons Why is a book that I picked up before I even got halfway through my graduate schooling. Why? Because I know Jay. Jay worked at the San Luis Obispo library and attended my church prior to moving to Tahoe. I had no idea how popular the book was (and I heard even a movie in the works) and I encourage you to read it!

Please read it before giving to students so you know the content and can appropriately give it to students. There is highly sensitive subject matter throughout the book, but it is student appropriate with caution (and likely parent approval).

You Are Doing a Freaking Great Job.: And Other Reminders of Your Awesomeness

This is a fun little book that I got for my Principal at the end of a year. Not a lot of deep thought in it – but a bright and nice way to remind yourself why you do what you do when the doing gets tough. Buy it for yourself or for a colleague!

Self-Care Shopping

AmazonBasics Silicone Baking Mat

Self-care is important – I love to cook and bake in my off time…mostly because I love to eat. These silicone baking mats ROCK. Forget parchment paper, non-stick spray, etc. when baking cookies, pie, bread, rolls, or anything else you need to put on a baking sheet. I baked an apfelstrudel and the sugary, carmelly, gooey goodness inside went all over and I literally wiped it off. Awesome.

Enjoy and have fun!

Hope you shop till you drop, enjoy these items, and comment below on how you like them. I also want to know what YOU think should be included in these lists! Leave a comment or shoot me an email. I always am looking for great deals on awesome products to improve my work and personal life.
