If your day is anything like my day in the school counseling office – you answer tons of emails. Many emails sound oddly similar too. I get many emails each day requesting meetings and appointments, a schedule change, a transcript, etc. I am sure you do too. Typing out each reply is a waste of time and finger stamina. Thank goodness someone at Google had that thought too and created a super simple but mega-powerful Gmail Labs tool – Canned Responses.
I created a 5 minute screen share video to quickly go from zero to canned response guru and taking minutes of your day back with each email.

If you are anything like me, you consume information like you are drinking from a fire hose. The constant influx from social media, network news, and all of our favorite school counseling blogs can quickly become overwhelming. You may have some other similarities to me like trying to keep up with your learning efficiently. Luckily for both of us – there are ways to help streamline our information feeds and I am going to show you some of my favorite and most popular tools.
Many times, when I am working with PDF (Portable Document Format) files, I run into a few common issues. First is that I have a few different pages from different files that I want to put into one PDF file. Whether this is because I am pulling together a lesson plan from a few different resources or because I am using CutePDF (<- an extra tool for you!) to print some Microsoft Word pages to PDF's - a simple, web-based tool is available to us to get the job done.
This blog post will be discussing YouTube and all the power that it provides to school counselors everywhere. From morning school announcements to recording parent nights, the power of YouTube is unquestionable. As one of the most popular websites around the world, YouTube has created a huge name for itself in entertainment, education, and broadcast.
Yesterday, I posted a blog post about Mouse Without Borders – a program that lets you use one mouse/keyboard to control multiple separate computers. However, what if you only have one computer? Did you know that there have been multiple studies (like this and this) showing the increased efficiency and productivity through using a two (or dual) monitor setup at work or home? It is true and totally awesome.
Have you ever wanted to feel like you were the master of your technology? I thought so – now is the chance.
Lots of times, we counselors (and teachers or administrators) have an old desktop but also a laptop that we need to use for different purposes. What if you wanted or needed to use both? Did you know you can make a dual monitor setup at home or at work with out two monitors (but with two computers)? You can.
Today’s post is thanks to Amalia Bush from The Best Choice Reviews who has passed along a very cool and informative infographic (a visual representation of data) comparing the ever popular iPad to other tablets on the market. Take a look!
Hello fellow Geeks. I am going to start a new feature on The Counseling Geek this week – I am dubbing it the School Counselor Shopping List. I am not sure about you – but I am an avid online shopper, high quality item finder, and a seeker of good deals. I thought I could share some of my golden finds with you (and how I am using them in my counseling programs!
I will most likely post bi-monthly about some of the recent purchases (or wish list items) that have really been great for my professional growth, blogging, and counseling site purposes. I hope that this is helpful for some and I will try to give some personal experience reviews when applicable.
As I kick off my week of vacation (finally!) for Ski week, I wanted to get a new Vlog out to you. I started using LucidChart towards the end of last year for some scheduling documents at my site. It was handy for showing progressions, processes, or steps to take. Check out the video below for more info. Let me know what you think of LucidChart!
